We are excited to see the handover of one of our most recent healthcare projects, an Intensive Therapy Unit for Macclesfield District General Hospital.

DSSR provided full M&E design duties—on behalf of the East Cheshire NHS Trust—from the initial design concepts to project completion. We were joined on the design team by the project’s architects, Gilling Dod, and structural engineers, Sanderson Watts.

This project involved the refurbishment of an existing area within the first floor of the hospital to form a new critical care department. This enables Macclesfield General to continue to deliver high-quality services and provide safe, effective, and personal care to the patients within the Cheshire community.

Working within a live healthcare environment is an intricate and complex challenge where phasing is key to success; to ensure there is no disruption of services or disruption to the facility’s patients, pre-planning, a clear understanding of the various elements of the works, and how they relate to each other, is critical to achieving a successful outcome.

It is extremely important with refurbishment projects to understand the existing installation and how it operates. This step is key in being able to identify risks when working in live buildings and minimising disruption to adjacent areas.  With Macclesfield District General Hospital, DSSR reviewed how the new systems were to interface with existing services in consultation with the Estates Team to ensure the impact of any works was understood by all parties and carefully planned.

Acute services provided at Macclesfield District General Hospital include A&E emergency care and emergency surgery, elective surgery in many specialities, maternity and cancer services.
