DSSR was appointed to deliver Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health building services consultancy at Lochranza Distillery on the Isle of Arran.

The project was an extension to the existing distillery to provide four new 13,000-litre washbacks to supplement the existing six washbacks to increase production due to rising demand for Arran Single Malt Whisky.

A new visitor entrance with lift access was also provided to the distillery to enhance the tour experience.

We are proud to have worked on the famous distillery on the Isle of Arran which has been the location of the island’s first legal distillery for over 150 years. Until the 19th century, Arran was renowned for its Malt Whisky–often made illicitly–and known locally as ‘Arran Water’.

Services included utility diversions, low voltage infrastructure, emergency voice communication, platform lift, domestic water services, mechanical ventilation design for operational and thermal comfort, BMS controls, thermal modelling and overheating analysis and general, emergency, feature and external lighting installations.

To manage overheating and high CO2 levels, we specified new ventilation systems, comprising speed-controllable mechanical extract fans (high and low level) with natural inlet and outlet louvres. Fans and louvres across different levels are positioned around the perimeter elevations to allow for higher air change rates to be achieved within the building.
