DSSR is an independent firm of building services design engineers and technical specialists working across the built environment. Our Building Performance Modelling & Sustainability teams are embedded within our integrated engineering design team, which delivers complete building services engineering solutions for projects of all types.
Working as a key member of our experienced Building Performance Modelling team, you will assist with the development of energy, decarbonisation and sustainability strategies for new-build and existing buildings, supporting our Building Services Engineers and Sustainability Specialists.
You will have the opportunity to increase your knowledge of the various environmental systems for buildings, undertake assessments, provide sustainability advice, and visit sites to see work being undertaken—all whilst working towards professional membership.
The IES-VE tool is central to the role, and as such, experience using this integrated analysis tool is desirable. An understanding of Part L / Section 6 assessments, climate-based daylighting analysis, operational energy calculation using TM54, decarbonisation studies, and sustainability rating tools (such as BREEAM and NABERS will also be beneficial.
Candidates should possess:
- BSc/MSc or BEng / MEng in a subject related to the Built Environment or Engineering.
- 2+ years knowledge and experience of building physics, particularly relating to heat transfer, energy, thermal comfort and natural ventilation.
- Experience working with IES-VE software
- • Low Carbon Energy Assessor accreditation for Non-domestic Buildings using the IES VE software
- Excellent communication skills with a positive and flexible attitude
- Enthusiasm for a career in sustainable building design, underpinned by an understanding of our sector and work

The successful candidate will be required to liaise with clients, contractors and other stakeholders and will be responsible for preparing and managing project budgets and schedules whilst ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.
Key Skills
Candidates should ideally possess a degree in either building services engineering or electrical engineering and be proficient in the use of relevant industry design software (i.e. AutoCad, NBS, Amtech etc). What is your current role within DSSR?
My current role is Senior Mechanical Engineer. I produce designs of mechanical building services on a variety of projects but with a focus on healthcare projects. Currently, I am designing new modular operating theatres, endoscopy buildings and emergency departments at hospital sites across the UK.
How would you describe your experience with DSSR so far?
I have been able to gain valuable experience and develop as an Engineer whilst working on a variety of interesting projects. I’ve found the work fast-paced, due to the speed of construction of modular design, and I have been able to witness the progress and the opening of several new departments since joining only 2 years ago.
How would you describe DSSR to other graduate engineers?
There are a lot of opportunities within the company to be exposed to a variety of work. For example, I now advise on the latest renewable technologies to be incorporated and ensure buildings are completed and comply with the latest healthcare design guidance. I also coordinate with all other disciplines including architects, structural and project engineers.

What is your current role within DSSR?
In my current role as Assistant Mechanical Engineer, I undertake the design of mechanical services on projects. This can range from mechanical surveys, drafting drawings in AutoCAD/REVIT, to writing specifications and reports.
How would you describe your experience with DSSR so far?
So far, my experience with DSSR has been great. I’ve been able to work on meaningful projects, due to our strong healthcare presence, and also lead smaller education projects. The experience I’ve gained at DSSR doesn’t compare to anywhere else.
How would you describe DSSR to other graduate engineers?
DSSR is great for graduates as we have a range of projects to gain industry experience and knowledge of various sectors. Support is always available when needed, professionally and personally.
