We understand that it can be challenging to keep up with the quick pace of change that is required when dealing with an emergency, and with almost daily updates on policies and standards relating to climate change, and DSSR Sustainability Specialist can help you navigate the requirements and ensure that your projects are addressing these key issues.

The challenge

Our world faces a significant global challenge, human interference with the climate system is resulting in more extreme weather, water scarcity, ecological destruction and conflict. Commitments set out within the Paris Agreement aim is to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change by keeping a global temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

02 / Delivering net zero carbon

Zero Carbon is the greatest challenge that the real estate and construction sector has ever seen and we all have a hand in delivering it, with no options to take a back seat.

The UK was the first major economy in the world to pass laws to end its contribution to global warming, setting a target to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. With Buildings and the construction industry being responsible for approximately 40% of the planet’s energy-related carbon emissions, there is much that can be done in the property sector.

If we are to meet our commitment to keeping global temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels immediate action is required. As one of the first signatories of the UK Building Services Engineers Declare a Climate and Biodiversity Emergency DSSR is committed to driving forward the net zero carbon agenda by sharing knowledge of this critical issue in construction.

Whether you’re looking to create a net zero new build or ensure an existing building operates at zero carbon, the scope needs to be established to inform your strategy. As Sustainable Building Services Consultants we understand the carbon impact of energy and how operational net zero carbon can be achieved and will help you respond to mandatory regulations (planning and building regulations) or voluntary frameworks (such as ESG reporting and Sustainability benchmarking)

03 / Sustainable Strategy and Governance

Investors, regulators, consumers and employees are now increasingly demanding that companies should not only be good stewards of capital but also of natural and social capital and have the necessary governance framework in place to support this.

ESG stands for environmental, social and governance. These are called pillars in ESG frameworks and represent the 3 main topic areas that companies are expected to report in.

At DSSR we work with our clients to benchmark your existing properties against these pillars and provide guidance on how to improve performance based on defined priorities, level of ambition and goals. For this understanding, we develop environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategies and road maps with targets based on science-based targets.
