DSSR is an award–winning engineering design consultancy.

We are an independent building services design consultancy with more than 79 years of experience which specialises in the design of innovative mechanical, electrical and public health services. We help our clients achieve operational Net Zero Carbon by applying our expert knowledge and using the latest design technologies and methods to create the most energy-efficient MEP services possible.

DSSR is one of the largest independent Building Services Consultants in the UK, with offices in Glasgow, Harrogate, London and Manchester.

In over 79 years of trading, DSSR has been commissioned to complete a very diverse range of projects throughout the country. Operating throughout the UK, the organisation relies on experienced teams of engineers and designers from different specialities to offer a wealth of technical expertise and design innovation.

Our dedicated teams specialise in specific markets sectors from retail, leisure, education, commercial, residential, healthcare and industrial.

We can draw on these specialist teams to ensure that we offer a robust, innovative and sustainable M&E design service to our clients.

Collaborative Approach

DSSR’s entire approach to service delivery is predicated on the idea of collaborative team working and only in this way would the commission be properly understood, designed, managed and delivered. A keystone of this approach is the Director and Regional Director-level commitment throughout the life of the commission with key roles including Customer Relationship Management, Expertise and Leadership of the DSSR Engineering Team.

DSSR have a well-established procedure for management of the professional services provided on all projects. The senior management structure and design responsibility assures involvement at the appropriate level throughout the contract from inception to completion stage. DSSR’s team of dedicated professionals are fully accredited with memberships including CIBSE, ASHRAE, ACE, IHEEM, BREEAM.

History of Sustainable Projects

A forward-thinking firm with a legacy in low-carbon building design, DSSR has contributed to a number of sustainability firsts throughout its 79 years—including a number of landmark renewable energy projects.

Energy efficiency has always been a vital consideration within every design created by DSSR. Over the past 79 years, we have demonstrated that we are specialists in designing energy-efficient buildings across a wide range of professional sectors, utilising innovative MEP designs, and applying the latest design technologies.

The Sustainability Lead for DSSR, Fiona is a Regional Director who has been with the company for over 25 years. She manages a multi-disciplinary team, with particular expertise in Sustainable Building Design, is a Chartered Engineer, and has been a Member of CIBSE for 18 years. Fiona is a Low Carbon Energy Assessor LCEA (Scotland), BREEAM Assessor (NC & RFO), BREEAM Accredited Professional (AP), CIBSE Heat Network Consultant.

Company Ethos

The DSSR ethos is to work successfully as part of an integrated design and construction team, to be client-focussed, and to deliver a low energy / low carbon impact, well-designed, capital and revenue cost-efficient scheme. We also offer intelligent and informed advice and input on all matters relating to the project and we are willing and able to contribute to the overall design development of the project. Many projects have benefited from our input beyond the scope of the base M&E design, by using our problem-solving, analytical skills and applying them to the issue at hand.

Bill Chalmers

Managing Director

Bill is a Chartered Engineer with vast industry experience who has worked within DSSR for over 40 years. He is a Director within DSSR, based within our Glasgow office, and has a comprehensive, strategic role within the business with responsibility for financial and HR matters. Bill has a keen interest in innovative technologies, which is a crucial component of his continuing drive to ensure that DSSR continually designs efficient and comfortable environments.

Gordon Smith

Director

Gordon is a Director based in our Glasgow office and is responsible for the operation management of the office. He has been with the business for over 35 years and has a wealth of experience in many different sectors. Gordon has a passion for electrical engineering; in particular, he is experienced in the evolution of systems integration to ensure that the most sustainable and carbon-efficient methods are being adopted.

David Guilfoyle

Director

David is a Chartered Engineer with over 25 years’ of experience within the industry, more than 20 years of which have been with DSSR. He is Director within DSSR with an overarching responsibility for the Manchester and Harrogate offices. David has extensive experience in managing and delivering projects from conception through to completion and has worked across multiple sectors and frameworks. He has particular expertise in the Healthcare and Pharmaceutical sectors having delivered many high-profile projects in these sectors.

Hugh Currie

Consultant

Hugh joined DSSR in 1983 and served as a Director for many years until 2022. Hugh now operates as a Consultant for the business, providing support to our Glasgow office on business development and strategic project matters.

Phil Duffy

Consultant

Phil has over 40 years within the industry and has been with DSSR for more than three decades. He is a Chartered Engineer and is responsible for our London operation. As a Director for 18 years until 2024, Phil has a wealth of experience within various market Sectors—with particular specialisms in the Transport, Residential and Hotel sectors—having delivered many high-profile projects within these areas.

Stuart Brand

Consultant

Stuart is a Regional Director with over 20 years of experience with DSSR. He manages a multi-disciplinary team, specializing in the delivery of education and healthcare projects. Stuart prides himself of his commitment to partnering and team working. His ability to engage with project teams and his practical knowledge of sustainable design solutions all provide the necessary skills for successful project delivery.

Fiona Williamson

Regional Director

Fiona is a Regional Director within our Glasgow office. She is a Chartered Engineer and has been with the business for over 25 years. She has a passion for sustainability and the decarbonisation of buildings. She has extensive experience in the implementation of low-carbon solutions across a range of building types. Fiona advises the wider business on the current innovation and the route to Net Zero. Fiona heads up the sustainability department and has a team of specialist engineers.

Lindsay Wood

Regional Director

Lindsay is a Chartered Engineer with over 25 years’ of experience within the business. She is a Regional Director located within our Glasgow office. Lindsay heads up a team of multi-disciplinary engineers and has a wealth of experience in the delivery of projects across multiple sectors. She has been able to utilize this experience to fulfil the role of an expert witness and act as a 3rd party independent reviewer.

Matthew Day

Regional Director

Matthew is a Regional Director, responsible for our Harrogate office, and has been with the practice for over 30 years. He has a wealth of expertise within the healthcare sector, with specialist knowledge of HTM & HBN guidance. Matthew has been instrumental in the successful, innovative design of a number of multi-million-pound healthcare projects, including Operating Theatres, ICCU and A&E Departments, as stand-alone schemes and as part of whole hospital developments. He also leads both the DSSR Quality Management Systems and Building Information Modelling groups.

Mike Singleton

Regional Director

Mike is a former Director within the Manchester office and now operates as a Regional Director. He has a wealth of experience in the delivery of projects from conception through to completion. Mike has been integral in the successful completion of some of the most prestigious Healthcare projects undertaken by the practice and is well-versed in many different Framework and procurement methods.

Steve Robertson

Regional Director

Steve is a Chartered Engineer with over 25 years of experience with DSSR. He is a Regional Director located within our Manchester office. Steve leads the Electrical team within the Manchester office and has a wealth of experience in the delivery of projects. Steve has a particular focus on the design of Healthcare Engineering having delivered a number of key projects within this sector. He prides himself on a Client focused approach and delivers projects from conception through to completion.

John Hatton

Regional Director

John is a Regional Director within DSSR and has been with the business for over 30 years. John has a unique role within DSSR, being responsible for both business development and the management of key projects. His experience as an Electrical Engineer, and his experience of project management, allow him to develop business through a key understanding of the design and construction processes. John prides himself on ensuring that both existing and new relationships are developed and maintained.

Jez Beales

Regional Director

A Regional Director operating out of DSSR's Manchester offices, Jez has extensive knowledge and experience in the Healthcare field, having co-ordinated the Mechanical Engineering Services Design on many major hospital projects. His knowledge of the healthcare sector has led to an in-depth understanding and familiarisation of HTM’s HBN’s and other relevant design criteria. Jez is an Authorised Person for design of Healthcare ventilation systems and is involved in the development of key standards within this field.

James Walford

Regional Director

James is a Chartered Engineer with over 30 years of experience within the Industry. He is a Regional Director located within our Manchester office and manages a team of Multi-disciplinary Engineers. He has extensive experience in the design of Building Services in many different sectors with a range of project size and complexity. James’s prides himself in the quality of design and ensures that the companies quality standards and maintained in our project delivery.
