Overview of the Newsprinters project

News International chose DSSR to support the development of two significant logistics facilities in Broxbourne and Knowsley, with a collective value of £265m and measuring 1.45 million ft² in total.

Newsprinters chose DSSR to support the development of two significant newspaper printing facilities in Broxbourne and Knowsley, with a collective value of £265m and measuring 1.45 million ft² in total.

For Broxburne, DSSR assisted with the outline scheme design for the D&B tender and was subsequently novated to Carillon for the design development. DSSR were also retained as client advisor/design guardian.

At Knowsley, DSSR performed the full design of all buildings services and process support services, including hook-up supporting reel handling and storage, printing, and post press. We also provided fast-track design and procurement, including extensive pre-fabrication, and were retained as client advisor/design guardian.

In the early stages of a recent design, DSSR challenged the servicing strategy developed for the News International Print Works in Broxbourne and proposed an Energy Centre instead of the roof-mounted plant areas included in the concept.

This enabled the energy centre to proceed in parallel with the printworks reducing the construction time and reducing the time risk to the project.

Although there was additional structure to be built, this was more than offset by the improvement in the construction programme and the reduction in programme risk.
