Overview of the Leighton Hospital Emergency Department project

DSSR was proud to see the recent successful handover of a new emergency extension for Leighton Hospital, the latest in a series of modular healthcare construction projects we have collaborated on with MTX Contracts throughout England. The new department enhances the hospital’s essential A&E services through the provision of a range of state-of-the-art facilities.

Utilising Modern Methods of Construction, Leighton Hospital has now been expanded with a further 4,200m² of emergency care accommodation, comprised of 100 modules. The new facility has also successfully achieved a BREEAM score of ‘Very Good’.

DSSR Consulting Engineers was appointed to provide the full M&E design services for the extension. Following the recent handover, Leighton Hospital—the largest care facility in the control of the Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust—is now able to utilise more treatment rooms, rapid assessment rooms, isolation bays, resuscitation bays, a bereavement suite, CT and X-Ray facilities, in addition to a dedicated paediatric unit and mental health assessment rooms.

Cutting edge collaborative architectural and M&E design, together with our passionate MTX project team expertise, resulted in an aesthetically pleasing, fit-for-purpose modern facility - MTX Contracts Ltd.

Healthcare Experience

Every new healthcare project is an opportunity to widen the skill set of our engineers, and from a design point of view, there were significant challenges associated with this project. In a live environment, the services for the modular extension needed to be linked to the main services network of the existing building—including medical gasses and new electrical connections.

Our healthcare experience spans 75 years, with the project at Leighton Hospital encompassing years of innovation in building design and the latest modern trends in Healthcare delivery and patient experience.

Projects like Leighton Hospital are an excellent case study for showcasing the potential of modular construction, and MTX have really raised the bar in terms of what is possible; using modern methods of construction and modular elements, they have managed to create a 2-storey critical care facility—all whilst encompassing net-zero carbon approach.DSSR is delighted to have been able to assist in this journey of enhancing the existing facilities. The Leighton Hospital extension project showcases how effective modular construction can be in the healthcare industry when utilised by a quality construction partner - David Guilfoyle – DSSR Director
