This new primary school for Perth & Kinross Council has an integrated nursery and accommodates more than 500 nursery and primary pupils.  It includes a gymnasium, sports pitches, multi-use games area and secure playground.

DSSR were responsible for full design duties for all M&E services, and were also the BREEAM Assessors.

To ensure that the design met the energy and carbon emission targets DSSR undertook extensive modelling, not only to prove that a low energy building would be delivered, but also to achieve suitable internal comfort conditions. Comfort conditions in terms of air quality and temperature are major factors in student performance and therefore critical to the success of the building.

Modelling and the design took account of the open plan nature of classrooms and common circulation spaces to encourage excellent natural ventilation of the spaces.

LZCT used for the school includes a biomass boiler housed in a dedicated heat station facility that incorporates fuel storage.  The school has achieved a ‘Very Good’ BREEAM rating, and an EPC B+ rating.

The M&E design also took account of the potential for a third pupil stream to be added to via an extension, while minimising capital costs and potential future disruption.
