We believe in the important work being carried out by the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare and continue to support the good work carried out by NHS Forest. DSSR colleagues based in different offices across the UK have also volunteered their time, helping to plant more trees on NHS estates. Over the past 12 months, DSSR has once again supported the NHS Forest by sponsoring 500 trees.
Green spaces are one of our most neglected health resources. A growing body of evidence points to the benefits of access to nature and green space for mental and physical health, including positive outcomes for heart rates and blood pressure, stress levels, mood and self-esteem, obesity, type 2 diabetes, post-operative recovery, birth weight, children’s cognitive development and cardiovascular disease.
When people have more access to green space where they live, income-related health inequalities are less marked. In England alone, it has been calculated that the NHS could save an estimated £2.1 billion every year in treatment costs if everyone had access to good quality green space.
The NHS Forest started life as a tree-planting project in 2009. Since then, more than 400 healthcare sites across the UK have joined the alliance, and over 130,000 trees have been planted on or near their estates.

NHS Forest 2024-25 – Planting Season in Review
This season, the NHS Forest facilitated the planting of 25,464 trees across the UK:
- 11,950 (46.9%) were distributed as 245 ‘Trees for Healthcare bundles’
- 12,461 (48.9%) made up larger site-specific orders
- 1,053 trees (4.1%) were productive fruit varieties
The combined total supplied in winter 2024-25 accounts for 16% of all planting since NHS Forest’s inception in 2009. Species diversity was increased this season, with a total of 32 native species supplied (up from 20 in 2023/24), plus 3 non-native species and 59 fruit varieties.
NHS Forest was pleased to supply fruit bundles again this season as part of our Healthcare Orchards scheme. Sites were able to request a bespoke mix of apple, pear, cherry, plum, damson, gage, medlar and quince varieties; apple cultivars were by far the most popular orchard tree choice.
- Trees were applied for and supplied to 159 unique healthcare sites managed by 125 trusts and other NHS service providers.
- The average size of all orders was 127 trees.
- The largest number of trees supplied to a single site was 2,290 (Princess Alexandra Hospital), and the smallest was 5 (Mary Seacole Nursing Home).
- Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust was also the largest recipient trust, followed closely by South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust and Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, which also planted more than 2,000 trees each.
“NHS Forest would like to express our sincere appreciation to all tree sponsors that have collectively funded our planting work this season. It simply wouldn’t be possible for us to operate at this scale without your support, and we are immensely grateful for your backing of our project.”

“Climate change is real, and buildings must evolve. This study proves that with smart retrofitting, resilience is possible – even in Kerala’s humid heat.”
Shrijit Sugathan
Research Topic: Retrofitting for a Resilient Future: Achieving Net-Zero in Kerala Homes
My study explored the feasibility of transforming tropical residential buildings – specifically in Kerala – into net-zero energy homes through targeted retrofitting strategies. By improving the building envelope, integrating energy-efficient systems, and incorporating solar PV, the research showed remarkable results in energy savings, indoor comfort, and future climate resilience.
Key Highlights:
- Energy Efficiency: Retrofitting cut energy use nearly in half—from 8772.8 kWh to 4802.7 kWh.
- Renewable Integration: Solar PV systems generated 5250.5 kWh annually, achieving net-zero and even surplus energy in certain months.
- Thermal Comfort: Natural ventilation, ceiling fans, and shading reduced extreme indoor heat, especially in living areas.
- Climate Resilience: Despite an 84% projected energy demand increase by 2080, retrofitted homes outperformed current standards, proving their long-term sustainability.

This week, members of the DSSR Sustainability Team attended the All-Energy Conference, the UK’s largest low-carbon energy and renewables event, at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC). All-Energy is a vital date on the calendar for professionals driving the renewable and low-carbon energy transition, offering expertise, innovative technologies, and critical insights to shape a net-zero future.
For DSSR, the event was a strategic opportunity for us to:
- Stay ahead of evolving regulations (e.g., Part L updates, net-zero compliance) and discover new methods of designing future-proof buildings such as the latest heat pumps, smart grids, and energy storage systems.
- Engage with 270+ exhibitors from 14 countries, identifying technologies that can be integrated into client projects for improved efficiency and decarbonisation.
- Connect with policymakers, developers, and investors actively seeking building services expertise to deliver sustainable infrastructure, retrofits, and energy-efficient designs.
Our team explored the latest challenges and opportunities in energy transition, attending seminars on heat decarbonisation, retrofitting, and cross-sector collaboration. The insights gained will directly inform DSSR’s design strategies and client solutions, ensuring we remain at the forefront of low-carbon building innovation.
Networking and Knowledge Sharing
Senior Sustainability Specialist, Rachel Mason, and Sustainability Assistant, Atheya Rajeev, highlighted the value of All-Energy’s global networking:
Rachel Mason:
“I’ve attended All-Energy for eight years, and this year’s focus on heat networks and affordable low-carbon heating was especially relevant for our work. The event is unmatched for building partnerships—whether with technology suppliers or developers needing MEP expertise to meet sustainability targets.”
Atheya Rajeev:
“The seminar on Scotland’s Heat Transition underscored how collaboration between designers, government, and private sectors is critical to achieving net-zero buildings. As my first All-Energy, it was inspiring to see how DSSR’s work aligns with these larger industry goals.”

We took advantage of the good weather to shoot a progress update on the North Rotunda refurbishment 🌞 The North Rotunda was originally built 135 years ago and housed an industrial elevator. This lowered horses, carriages, vehicles, and passengers to a now-disused tunnel under the river Clyde that leads to an identical twin South Rotunda. In this video, we fly over the tunnel towards the South Rotunda.
The new design will see the creation of ‘The Roundhouse’ on the ground floor, and ‘The Rotunda’ on the upper floors while restoring historic features like the cast iron and glass cupola.
