Inspiring Tomorrow’s Engineers at FunSTEM

Engaging with the next generation of engineers is a genuine pleasure, and we were thrilled to take part in the FunSTEM Renewable Energy project, a brilliant initiative by the Engineering Development Trust (EDT). The project, which saw us partner with Clyde Gateway and St Mungo’s Academy, gave us a wonderful opportunity to connect with young people in our local community and inspire them to consider careers in engineering and other STEM subjects.

Our involvement began at the project’s online launch event, where our Regional Director, Fiona Williamson, and Sustainability Assistant, Atheya Rajeev, delivered a presentation about DSSR and our roles within the company. The S4 pupils from Sacred Heart, St Anne’s, St Michael’s, St Denis’ and St Thomas’ Primary Schools were full of brilliant questions about what we do. It was great to see their enthusiasm and curiosity, which was a clear indication of their passion for science and technology. The project challenged these young people to become design engineers and entrepreneurs, developing their own products to generate energy sustainably. Over the course of a few weeks, they worked in teams to research, design, and create a model or vlog, which they then presented at a graduation event.

Atheya had the pleasure of attending the graduation at St Mungo’s Academy to represent DSSR and act as a volunteer judge for the students’ projects. She was tasked with assessing the creative solutions and ideas presented by a number of different teams. The pupils’ imagination and their understanding of renewable energy were truly impressive. The projects were innovative and well-thought-out—and the students’ enthusiasm was contagious. Atheya particularly enjoyed the conversations she had with them, as they were full of questions and new ideas, making the judging process a joy rather than a task. It was inspiring to witness these young minds take such an interest in a more sustainable future.

“It was great fun to see interesting projects, chatting with the students, and seeing how they understood renewable energy in their own unique ways. Their enthusiasm and imagination really stood out, and it made the judging process a joy rather than a task.”

Atheya Rajeev, DSSR Sustainability Assistant

Being involved in initiatives like FunSTEM is incredibly important to us. It allows us to give back to the local community and, most importantly, to support and encourage young people as they consider their future career paths. We believe that by engaging with the next generation, we can help to shape a brighter, more sustainable future for everyone.

DSSR competes in the inaugural Morrison Construction Cup for charity

We were recently invited to take part in a charity football tournament by Morrison Construction, part of the Galliford Try Group, raising money for two nominated charities: MacMillan Cancer Support and Alzheimer Scotland.

Morrisons hailed the purpose of event as “bringing together our colleagues, clients, consultants, and subcontractors for a fun-filled day of football, food, and drinks—all while raising funds for our two nominated charities. We hope this will become an annual event, and we would love for you to be part of the first one.”

Our team comprised Fraser Faulks, David Stewart, Cameron Young, Adam Cooper, James Henry, and Ethan Porter.

The guys put in a valiant effort, coming joint-top of the group stages with 9 points, and managed to reach the quarter finals before being defeated by an imposing host team from Morrison Construction (and no, we didn’t let them win).

Ending on a positive note, DSSR struck it gold in the raffle, with Fraser scooping 3 prizes and David coming away with a signed Celtic top.

DSSR continues to support the NHS Forest

For many years, DSSR has been a sponsor of the NHS Forest, an alliance of health sites working to transform their green space to realise their full potential for health, wellbeing and biodiversity, and to encourage engagement with nature. It is run by the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare, an independent UK charity, as part of its Green Space for Health programme.

We believe in the important work being carried out by the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare and continue to support the good work carried out by NHS Forest. DSSR colleagues based in different offices across the UK have also volunteered their time, helping to plant more trees on NHS estates. Over the past 12 months, DSSR has once again supported the NHS Forest by sponsoring 500 trees.

Green spaces are one of our most neglected health resources. A growing body of evidence points to the benefits of access to nature and green space for mental and physical health, including positive outcomes for heart rates and blood pressure, stress levels, mood and self-esteem, obesity, type 2 diabetes, post-operative recovery, birth weight, children’s cognitive development and cardiovascular disease.

When people have more access to green space where they live, income-related health inequalities are less marked. In England alone, it has been calculated that the NHS could save an estimated £2.1 billion every year in treatment costs if everyone had access to good quality green space.

The NHS Forest started life as a tree-planting project in 2009. Since then, more than 400 healthcare sites across the UK have joined the alliance, and over 130,000 trees have been planted on or near their estates.

NHS Forest 2024-25 – Planting Season in Review

This season, the NHS Forest facilitated the planting of 25,464 trees across the UK:

  • 11,950 (46.9%) were distributed as 245 ‘Trees for Healthcare bundles’
  • 12,461 (48.9%) made up larger site-specific orders
  • 1,053 trees (4.1%) were productive fruit varieties

The combined total supplied in winter 2024-25 accounts for 16% of all planting since NHS Forest’s inception in 2009. Species diversity was increased this season, with a total of 32 native species supplied (up from 20 in 2023/24), plus 3 non-native species and 59 fruit varieties.

NHS Forest was pleased to supply fruit bundles again this season as part of our Healthcare Orchards scheme. Sites were able to request a bespoke mix of apple, pear, cherry, plum, damson, gage, medlar and quince varieties; apple cultivars were by far the most popular orchard tree choice.

  • Trees were applied for and supplied to 159 unique healthcare sites managed by 125 trusts and other NHS service providers.
  • The average size of all orders was 127 trees.
  • The largest number of trees supplied to a single site was 2,290 (Princess Alexandra Hospital), and the smallest was 5 (Mary Seacole Nursing Home).
  • Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust was also the largest recipient trust, followed closely by South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust and Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, which also planted more than 2,000 trees each.

“NHS Forest would like to express our sincere appreciation to all tree sponsors that have collectively funded our planting work this season. It simply wouldn’t be possible for us to operate at this scale without your support, and we are immensely grateful for your backing of our project.”
