Overview of the Royal Berkshire Hospital Urology Outpatients Department project
This important healthcare scheme was delivered as part of the NHS Capital for Targeted Investment in Elective Recovery, aimed at reducing the national backlog of elective procedures.
The project was designed and constructed by MTX using modern methods of construction (MMC), with a focus on delivering the 1,400m² facility faster, greener, and more cost-effectively than traditional construction. The facility is now fully complete and operational, providing much-needed capacity for the hospital’s Urology, Surgical, and Outpatients teams.
Facility Features and Layout
The state-of-the-art unit has been carefully planned to enhance urological care and patient experience. It includes six consultation and examination rooms, a spacious treatment room, an ultrasound scanner room, and specialist areas such as a treatment and chemotherapy suite, lithotripter room, and flexible laboratory. The building also features key support areas including reception and waiting zones, staff offices, rest areas, lockers, and changing rooms. The thoughtful layout was developed to improve patient flow and enable staff to operate efficiently in a high-quality clinical environment.
Mechanical and Electrical Design
DSSR delivered full mechanical and electrical design services across all stages of the project. A dedicated first-floor plant room houses key building services, including air handling units and other mechanical and electrical systems. These elements were designed and prefabricated offsite in line with the Government’s Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) protocols, supporting MTX’s modern construction methodology. DSSR ensured all MEP designs supported both clinical functionality and operational efficiency while meeting energy efficiency and regulatory standards.
Collaborative Delivery
Throughout the project, DSSR collaborated closely with MTX, Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust, and the wider design team to ensure the building services integrated seamlessly with the modular construction approach. The project was delivered on a live hospital site, requiring careful coordination to avoid disruption to Royal Berkshire’s 24/7 operations. The success of the new Urology Outpatients Department reflects the strength of this partnership and demonstrates DSSR’s capability in delivering sustainable, technically complex healthcare environments through modern construction methods.
