Our role in the project

DSSR delivered full MEP design services for the transformation of the historic Luss Smokehouse into a micro-distillery andvisitor destination for the Loch Lomond Group.

The Luss Distillery project involved the conversion of a historic smokehouse and the creation of three new buildings housing retail, food and beverage, and discovery functions, forming a cohesive visitor destination on the banks of Loch Lomond. Appointed by Loch Lomond Group, DSSR provided Mechanical, Electrical, and Public Health (MEPH) consultancy services from initial brief development through to detailed technical design (RIBA Stage 4), in line with the ACE Schedule of Services.

DSSR’s role encompassed the full integration of building services across the site, including the design of systems to support specialist distilling processes. This included the provision of a new steam boiler serving the client’s pre-purchased still, alongside discreet ventilation and coordinated service strategies that respected the architectural intent and conservation setting.

Collaboration with the wider design team enabled careful integration of external lighting and renewable technologies, including Solar PV, ensuring minimal visual impact within the village context.
Energy performance was a central component of the design. DSSR undertook detailed Section 6 compliance modelling using the approved Dynamic Simulation Model (IES VE ApacheSim) software to predict energy consumption and carbon emissions.

The Food & Beverage Building achieved a Building Delivered Energy Rate of 182.84 kWh/m²/yr, 6.3% below the target, while carbon emissions were 34.3% lower than the prescribed benchmark, demonstrating a high-performing, compliant design.
In addition to building services design, DSSR supported utilities coordination, securing upgraded power and water connections and liaising with statutory bodies. The completed development successfully combines process engineering, sustainability, and visitor experience, establishing Luss Distillery as a distinctive and contextually sensitive destination.
