Research Topic: Retrofitting for a Resilient Future: Achieving Net-Zero in Kerala Homes
My study explored the feasibility of transforming tropical residential buildings – specifically in Kerala – into net-zero energy homes through targeted retrofitting strategies. By improving the building envelope, integrating energy-efficient systems, and incorporating solar PV, the research showed remarkable results in energy savings, indoor comfort, and future climate resilience.
Key Highlights:
- Energy Efficiency: Retrofitting cut energy use nearly in half—from 8772.8 kWh to 4802.7 kWh.
- Renewable Integration: Solar PV systems generated 5250.5 kWh annually, achieving net-zero and even surplus energy in certain months.
- Thermal Comfort: Natural ventilation, ceiling fans, and shading reduced extreme indoor heat, especially in living areas.
- Climate Resilience: Despite an 84% projected energy demand increase by 2080, retrofitted homes outperformed current standards, proving their long-term sustainability.
Shrijit receives Pick Everard Award from Loughborough University
DSSR colleague, Shrijit Sugathan, was awarded the Pick Everard Prize from Loughborough University. This is awarded to the student on the MSc Low Energy Building Services Engineering programme with the highest overall mark for their research project.
Shrijit received the highest score for his research into the potential of targeted retrofitting strategies in transforming tropical residential buildings into net-zero energy homes.
Shrijit was presented with the award by ASHRAE President, Dennis Knight, at an award ceremony at Loughborough University.
