A purpose-built renal ward extension connected to Basildon University Hospital via a new linkway.
The facility comprises inpatient renal accommodation, assessment and treatment rooms, staff and public areas, and a rooftop plantroom. Working alongside MTX Contracts and CRI8, DSSR supported the project from concept design through to handover, ensuring the new facility integrated seamlessly with the live hospital estate whilst meeting the specialist needs of renal patients.
Overcoming Complex Site Constraints
A key challenge was the limited ceiling void space available for building services distribution, combined with the requirement to connect the new development into existing hospital infrastructure without disrupting clinical operations. Throughout construction, several on-site changes required ongoing review, coordination and design refinement. In the absence of a supported UPS system, DSSR developed a resilient electrical strategy using dual circuits supplied from essential hospital boards, ensuring continuity of power to critical clinical functions whilst maintaining compliance with healthcare requirements.
Specialist Engineering for Renal Healthcare
The unit incorporates highly specialised engineering systems to support renal care, including a reverse osmosis (RO) plant and a significant concentration of bedhead services across both single and multi-bed treatment areas. The high power density associated with dialysis and renal care facilities required careful electrical design and robust infrastructure provision. Extensive coordination of large ventilation ductwork, cable containment systems and critical service routes was undertaken to maximise available space and ensure efficient installation within the constrained building envelope.
Supporting NHS Sustainability Objectives
Sustainability was embedded throughout the design. DSSR incorporated roof-mounted solar PV generation and intelligent building controls to reduce operational energy consumption whilst supporting compliance with Part L requirements. The design balanced carbon reduction objectives with cost-effectiveness, helping the Trust deliver a modern healthcare environment that is both clinically resilient and energy efficient. The completed facility provides high-quality renal care accommodation that enhances patient experience, clinical functionality and long-term operational performance for Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust.
