02 / Overview

Overview of the Rolls Royce project

DSSR have a long standing association with the Rolls Royce facility.

DSSR provided full services design for the new 500,000 ft² Inchinnan facility in 2003 (i.e. included 7 No. new 11kV/ 400v substations).

This facility required flexible services installations to suit evolving manufacturing and maintenance operations. Services were organised on a cellular basis with a secondary grid of services allowing new manufacturing processes to be installed retrospectively without disrupting other operations in the facility. The facility included recirculating lubrication oil systems, process exhaust vent, process gases (including Nitrogen, Oxygen and Argon) and required a new 5 MW incoming power supply to be negotiated and procured.

More recently, we carried out a number of remodelling projects to support Rolls-Royce’s business requirements, including site-to-site plant transfer and service interconnections for design in excess of 500 separate plant items, and extensive HV and LV alteration works.

As part of the Client Side Design Team (CSDT), the project involved the appraisal of the Rolls-Royce technical specifications and layout proposals, and the subsequent design of engineering services to allow for the installation of new equipment within a sterilised area.

One of the most recent projects undertaken to suit the Rolls-Royce business continuity programme was for a new cell: Main Line Shafts. This commission allowed Rolls-Royce to manufacture Low-Pressure Compressor Shafts, Intermediate Pressure Turbine Shafts and Low-Pressure Turbine Shafts.

CIBSE Building Simulation Award Win

DSSR continued to be involved in the facility after completion, and when an issue arose from pressure imbalances as a result of new process exhaust systems, we were able to resolve the issue using a combination of practical site investigation, thermal modelling and CFD analysis.

We are particularly proud to have won the CIBSE Building Simulation Award in 2019 for this work; this is a worldwide competition, and we are particularly pleased to have brought it back to the UK.
